Running Bond

Walnut and maple end grain. Offset courses of walnut blocks separated by maple mortar lines — running bond, the oldest brickwork pattern in architecture. The walls it was named for were built to stand for centuries through exactly this structural logic: each row's joints land over the solid centers of the row below, distributing load across the whole. Rendered here in end grain, it reads as the thing itself rather than a reference to it.
