All padauk end grain, constructed as a grid of rotated squares — each cell oriented 90° from its neighbors, the way the two perpendicular thread axes of a loom cross each other to make cloth. In raw wood the pattern read as a muted checkerboard. Under finish, the padauk shifted into deep crimson over black grain structure, and the rotational geometry became the dominant visual rhythm. A board about how structure becomes legible when color has nowhere else to hide.
